Congratulations! You Are Being Rescued
“Congratulations! You Are Being Rescued” is an internet meme phrase that has gained popularity after the release of the Star Wars movie Rouge One. The quote in the movie is said by a robot by the name of K-2SO.
The quote originates from a scene in the movie Rogue One where the robot K-2SO, who is a reprogrammed imperial droid, grabs and throws the protagonist of the movie Jyn Erso onto the ground before congratulating them on being rescued. The full quote in question is 'Congratulations! You are being rescued', and very commonly the phrase 'Please do not resist' is also used after it.
The start of the meme around this quote started on January 3rd, 2017, when Instagram user Reyisbaeok uploaded the first three-panel version of the scene in the movie. Since then there have been quite a few edits of the three-panel scene in which various different countries and organizations have been represented in.
Numerous edits containing references to the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan eventually reached notoriety on several different subreddits. The Daily Dot also did a piece in which they showcased some of the edits made to the scene.
This meme is typically used to convey malicious intentions when a country or organization does something they suppose will help. The edits can be anything from countries, organizations, or even just individual people either in fiction or real life.
The quote and related three-panel edit of the scene can also be used to convey a sense of naivety. For example, there are edits of the scene that are used to convey that the organization is naive to the fact that the other group does not want the help of the organization. This is different in that it doesn't necessarily imply malicious intent by the organization or individual.
