Back in my day

About
“Back in my day” is an image macro built from a screenshot of Grandpa Abe Simpson sitting under a lemon tree with a few kids settled around him, mid-story. People slap a caption on the image, almost always opening with "Back in my day...", and fill in something that's already gone out of date, whether it's old tech, a dead website feature, or a trend nobody remembers anymore.
Origin
The screenshot comes from The Simpsons, season 6, episode 24, "Lemon of Troy," which first aired on May 14th, 1995.
In the scene, Abe plops down in front of a lemon tree and starts telling the neighborhood kids a story while they gather around to listen. Clips and stills of the moment began circulating online around 2015, including a YouTube upload titled Hey Everybody, An Old Man Is Talking and a still posted to Imgur.
It didn't really catch on as a caption format until early 2019, when an Imgur user paired the image with a joke about having to read a map for driving directions. The format came back around in October 2024, spreading again on X and Threads.
Meaning
The joke is old-timer nostalgia, usually pointed at yourself. Abe stands in for anyone old enough to remember a slightly older internet or some discontinued gadget, and the caption plays up how quaint or far-fetched it all sounds to someone younger.
