“Kevin James Shrugging” is a Getty Images stock photo of Kevin James wearing a green flannel and shrugging while looking directly into the camera on the set of the TV show The King of Queens. In late 2023, the image went viral on Twitter / X, where it was used as a reaction image and image macro, often with captions about boldly being cheeky or mischievous.
The image's virality spawned a new subgenre of Internet culture known as "Kevin James Posting," in which fans captioned stock photos and promotional photos from The King of Queens with jokes and references to Kevin James and his co-star Leah Remini.
Origin
On January 1, 1998, a photograph taken by Tony Esparzam for the CBS Photo Archive of actor Kevin James on the set of The King of Queens appeared on Getty Images.
It wasn't until September of 2023 that the image went viral online. The first known meme to use the image was posted on September 21st, 2023, by X user @ChampagneAnyone with the caption "me after 1 double rum and diet," and it received around 24,000 likes within three days.
Meaning
The meme captures the feeling of indifference towards the consequences of our actions, as if we believe we are untouchable. It reflects a sense of invincibility, disregarding any potential repercussions for our behavior.
