“Lorde Crying” is a reaction image of the New Zealand singer Lorde sitting on a bathroom floor in a black tank top and plaid shorts, hugging her knees and looking into the camera with a red, tear-streaked face. People put a one-line caption above the photo describing whatever has supposedly reduced them to tears. It spread mostly on Twitter / X, especially Stan Twitter, and also on Instagram and Reddit.
Origin
Lorde posted the photo herself on July 10th, 2025, as the seventh image in an Instagram carousel during the rollout of her album Virgin. The post passed 300,000 likes in five days.
The same day, PopBase reposted the picture on X with the caption "Lorde shares new photo." X user emssult quoted it with "white nb people when you ask them to do the dishes," which got over 4 million views, and more captioned versions followed within hours. The trend came right after the Lordussy jokes that had gone viral about Lorde in late June 2025.
Meaning
The caption names something small, silly or self-inflicted, and the photo plays it up as total heartbreak. Typical targets are Mondays, awkward job interviews, overeating, and fans waiting too long for new music from their favorite artist.
The tone is ironic. Nobody posting it is actually that upset, and the joke is how far the image overshoots the problem.
