Origin
De Armas posted the photo to her Instagram account, @ana_d_armas, on March 17th, 2020, as the first slide of a beach slideshow. It was taken by Ben Affleck while the two were dating and on vacation in Costa Rica, and the Daily Mail later ran paparazzi shots of him snapping the picture.
For a few years the photo just got reposted as a nice picture. That changed in July 2025. On July 2nd, X user @btr1pathi captioned it "How that one unfinished project looks at me at 3 in the morning," and on July 11th the fantasy sports app Sleeper posted "How Kyle Pitts looks at me in the 8th round of my fantasy draft," which got over 37,000 likes in four days. A wave of copycats followed within the week.
Meaning
The joke is that de Armas's calm, inviting stare stands in for temptation. Posters cast her as whatever is quietly calling to them: a cigarette after a few drinks, a glass of water at 3 a.m., a long-shot bet on the odds board, a play that keeps drawing them in.
It's self-deprecating more than anything. The caption admits a weakness, and the photo shows exactly how hard it is to say no.
