Annoyed Picard

About
“Annoyed Picard” is an image macro built on a screenshot of Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation, played by Sir Patrick Stewart (July 13, 1940 – October 28, 2026), with his arm stretched out and palm up, looking thoroughly fed up. The top caption almost always reads "Why the fuck", "How the fuck" or "What the fuck", and the bottom line finishes the question with whatever is getting on the poster's nerves. It took off on Quickmeme and Reddit's /r/AdviceAnimals in 2012 and is still used as a reaction image.
Origin
The frame comes from the Next Generation episode "Ménage à Troi", which first aired on May 28, 1990. In the scene, Picard is reciting Shakespeare's sonnets. Picard had already been a reaction-face staple for years before this, mostly thanks to the Facepalm image.
A Quickmeme page called "Annoyed Picard" went up on January 23, 2012. Redditors started posting it to /r/AdviceAnimals that February, and an April post reading "Who the fuck / let the dogs out?" picked up more than 3,200 upvotes. By August 2012 the original Quickmeme page and a later "Annoyed Picard HD" version had over 11,000 submissions between them.
Meaning
It's a rhetorical question delivered with maximum exasperation. People use it for small, everyday absurdities: hashtags on Facebook, grammar mistakes, job ads that want five years of experience for an entry-level role. Nobody actually expects an answer.
The joke lives in the gap between Picard's dignified captain energy and the petty thing he's furious about.
