About

“David Cross Stare” (also known as The Look White People Give) is a reaction image meme built around a close-up headshot of actor David Cross staring straight at the camera with a flat, unimpressed expression. A one-line caption sits above the photo, usually starting with "The look white people give when..." or naming some group of people and the thing that gets them to stare like that. It took off on X / Twitter and Instagram in early 2025.

Origin

Nobody's pinned down exactly where the headshot came from. It looks like it was taken around 2007, when Cross played the villain Ian Hawke in Alvin and the Chipmunks.

On January 15th, 2025, X user @indianloonie posted the photo with the caption "The look white people give when you insult Nardwuar", and it picked up over 152,000 likes in three weeks. Variations followed fast. Instagram account throwingfits posted one about Ralph the next day, and on February 5th X user @AmeenHus posted "Post office employees when you ask them to do anything", which passed 37,000 likes in under a day.

Meaning

The original version uses Cross as a stand-in for a very particular kind of white guy, the one who takes his niche music taste or favorite internet personality personally. The stare is what you get for questioning it.

Later posts mostly dropped the racial angle and kept the stare. Now it's a general reaction for blank, quietly annoyed refusal, like a retail or service worker hearing a request they have no intention of doing anything about.
