Blackbeard Writing

About
“Blackbeard Writing”, sometimes called Pirate Writing, is an image macro built on a painting of One Piece villain Blackbeard (Marshall D. Teach) leaning over a map by lamplight, quill in a hand covered in jeweled rings, with a sly grin. A caption above the picture describes someone pouring way too much effort or pride into writing something, usually something nobody asked for. It started on Reddit and iFunny in 2023 and went big on TikTok and Instagram in 2024.
Origin
The painting is fan art by DeviantArt artists jen-and-kris, posted on November 5th, 2012, under the title OP.The map. It passed around One Piece fan communities for years without turning into a meme.
That changed on September 11th, 2023, when Redditor microwavedraptin posted it to /r/dndmemes with the caption "DMs writing literal masterpieces for the lore of their world that only four to six people will be able to read:", which got over 13,000 upvotes. Variations followed on iFunny later that year, including a Skyrim version about character backstories. In April 2024 the image took off on TikTok through slow fade-in videos and photo slideshows, starting with a post by @wvorld about writing "etc." in an essay after running out of examples.
Meaning
The meme is about feeling like a genius while writing something. Blackbeard's smug, focused grin makes him look like he's drafting a masterpiece, so captions use him for game masters building lore, gamers inventing backstories, or students padding essays. A lot of the time the joke is that the work is pointless or no one will ever read it, and he's thrilled anyway.
Later versions stretched it to any kind of obsessive, slightly villainous dedication, like getting way too invested in Skibidi Toilet. Students also use it to joke about schoolwork, from cramming the night before an exam to how teachers imagined essays got written before ChatGPT.
