The earliest known post of the image is from Reddit. On March 3rd, 2023, user ITSNOTAPHASEMOM0_0 shared it under the name "Cigar Cougar," and the post got more than 1,800 upvotes and 55 comments over the following year. Where the picture first came from isn't known, but its odd anatomy points to an AI image generator.

It caught on slowly over 2024. In June, X user @Ese7391 posted it with the caption Me thinking, but I don't know thinking about what I'm thinking, and in August the Facebook page Meme Mental Asylum captioned it POV: I'm trying to heal in 2024.

Meaning

The cougar looks exhausted, a bit seedy and completely unbothered, like someone taking a long smoke break after a rough day. Captions put the poster in its place: zoning out after binge-watching a show, brooding over a random thought, or trying to recover from something.

The humor is mostly in how wrong the picture looks. Since it's a cursed image, part of the joke is just showing people something this strange.
