David Mitchell Eating Pizza

About
“David Mitchell Eating Pizza” is a reaction image of British comedian David Mitchell sitting in a blue-lit restaurant with a whole pizza and a glass of something pink, staring off to the side with zero joy on his face. Captions go above the photo and usually set up a moment that should look fun or romantic, then reveal this picture instead. It took off on X in April 2024.
Origin
Mitchell, best known for Peep Show, appears to have used the photo as his profile picture on X (@RealDMitchell), and reverse image searches date it back to at least 2017. The earliest known repost is an April 22nd, 2024, thread by @DobbyClub06 collecting several photos of Mitchell eating pizza.
The meme version showed up the same day. X user @bodkin2005 posted the picture with "Bro send me the photo from last night! The photo:" and got over 120,000 likes in four days. The next day @hannah1989__ used it for couples' anniversary posts and passed 140,000 likes. On April 24th, @dbbeats__ joked about music producers who make amazing beats while looking like this, which got another 70,000 likes.
Meaning
The photo stands for the awkward, unflattering reality behind something that's supposed to look good. Mitchell is out at a nice dinner with a full pizza in front of him, and he looks like he's waiting for a train. So captions set up an expectation, like a great night out, a cute anniversary post or a holiday snap, and the picture deflates it.
It also works as a general image for looking lame or uncomfortable in public. Mitchell's dry, slightly grumpy persona fits the joke, since he seems like the last person who'd want his photo taken.
