“Dinosaur Zapping Stegosaurus With Lightning” is a one-panel image macro built on an old paleoart illustration: a red Tyrannosaurus-like dinosaur stands over a Stegosaurus lying on its back and blasts it with blue lightning from both hands. It's also known as T-Rex Shocking Stegosaurus. People post it with a short caption above the picture, mostly on Twitter/X, Tumblr and iFunny.
Origin
Nobody knows exactly where the illustration first came from. One of the earliest known posts is from the Tumblr blog @thestomping-ground on February 17th, 2024, captioned "And now young Stegosaurus, you will die", a nod to Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars. The next day, X user @MetTiinA reposted it with a riff on the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise speech, calling vintage paleoart "a pathway to many abilities some would consider… unnatural."
It turned into a recaption meme in the summer of 2025. On July 1st, @seymourrbutz posted it as "The Land Before Time if Sharptooth was a Sith Lord", and a few days later @rosebudlight's version passed 150,000 likes. By August, tweets about unfolded laundry and bad karma were pulling tens of thousands of likes each. Some people also compared the dinosaur to Fulgur Anjanath, the electric monster from Monster Hunter.
Meaning
The Stegosaurus stands in for the poster, and the lightning is whatever is wrecking them: rejection, chores, a hangover, the week in general. The joke works because the picture is so over the top. A small everyday problem gets drawn as a prehistoric Sith Lord frying you alive.
It's also used the other way around, with the zapping dinosaur as the poster in a moment of pure, unhinged power. The Star Wars reading never really went away, so a lot of captions still lean on Palpatine's "Unlimited power!".
