Low Opacity Elrond Healing Frodo

About
“Low Opacity Elrond Healing Frodo”, often shortened to Low Opacity Elrond, is a still from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring where a faded, see-through Elrond stares straight at the camera while an unconscious Frodo floats beside him in a pale haze. People post it with a one-line caption above it about feeling half-awake, out of it, or stuck in some strange in-between state. It gets shared on Twitter/X, Tumblr, Reddit and Instagram.
Origin
The frame comes from Peter Jackson's 2001 film. After Frodo is stabbed by a Morgul blade and carried to Rivendell, Elrond (Hugo Weaving) heals him, and the movie shows it as a slow crossfade of Elrond's face, Frodo lying unconscious, and the halls of Rivendell. The hazy overlap of those shots is what gives Elrond his "low opacity" look.
The earliest known meme use is a Twitter thread by @pettingsoftily from November 25th, 2020, which ended on this shot with the caption "I don't even have a good caption for this, this shot is just insane." It got bigger in 2022: on May 28th @myelessar tweeted "every day I feel more and more like this lotr shot and no I can't explain it" and passed 51,000 likes, and on December 29th @joshcarlosjosh compared it to the week between Christmas and New Year's, which got over 77,000. The holiday version came back in December 2023, when posts from @TrishaMellon and @youwouldknow each passed 60,000 likes.
Meaning
The image is for feeling like you're barely there. Common captions are about waking up groggy from a nap, losing track of the days around the holidays, getting half-woken by someone talking to you, or just a general fog you can't put into words. It's often unclear whether you're supposed to be Elrond or Frodo, and that's part of why it works.
The tone is affectionate and a little absurd. Fans like the shot itself as much as the joke, so a lot of posts simply celebrate how weird it looks. Tumblr users even made October 24th "Low Opacity Elrond Day," since that's the date Frodo wakes up in Rivendell.
