“Messy Hair Bratz Doll”, also called the Messy Doll, is a reaction image of a blurry Bratz doll with a wrecked bun sticking straight up, hair falling over her face and a half-lidded stare. People caption it with a line of text above the picture to show themselves at their most frazzled: just woken up, coming home from a long night, or quietly losing it. The earliest known upload is a tweet from June 18th, 2017, by user @sorrynotsoorry. That account and the original post are gone, but quote-tweets of it are still up.
Within a week the picture was everywhere. On June 25th, 2017, @vaIcntino captioned it "Me waking up at 4pm from a 18 hour depression nap" and got over 88,000 likes, while another viral post the same day used it as a post-date look. That September a tweet kicked off the #BratzChallenge, where people styled themselves to look like the doll, and those cosplays kept turning up on Instagram into the 2020s.
Meaning
The doll is shorthand for looking like a mess and owning it. Captions usually explain why she looks this way: a nap that went way too long, a night that got out of hand, or something she's not going to talk about.
