“Thinking Baby” is a black-and-white photo of a newborn in profile, resting her chin on her hand and staring off to the side like she's working through something big. It's used as a reaction image, usually posted under a line of text that reads as the baby's thought: a strange question, an overheard quote, or something the poster can't stop thinking about. It took off on Twitter / X and Instagram in 2025, and it looks a lot like the Cat Thinking meme that was trending around the same time.
Origin
The photo was taken by a dad. On April 27th, 2006, Flickr user Mark 2000 uploaded a picture of his newborn daughter, Audrey, under the title Thoughtful Baby. In the description he said she was listening to Nirvana. For years it sat there quietly and picked up a few thousand views.
The earliest known meme came from Brazil. On June 16th, 2012, a user on the site Mundo Insano added Impact captions to it, and the image kept circulating in Brazilian meme circles after that. It got some use on X in mid-2024, then blew up in spring 2025. An April 2025 Instagram post captioned "Damn… my parents really 16" got over 250,000 likes, and the same week X users were pairing it with jokes about the 100 Men vs. 1 Gorilla debate.
Meaning
The baby stands in for the poster's own brain. Whatever sits above the photo is the thought being turned over, and the joke is how seriously a newborn seems to be taking it. Most captions are shower thoughts, petty questions, or odd quotes that the poster is still processing.
It also works as a quiet "hmm" reply. Posting it under someone else's tweet says you're suspicious, or just stuck on what they said, without spelling it out.
