About

“South Park Gamer Guy” (also called South Park WoW Guy or Fat Computer Nerd) is a one-panel image macro of the unnamed World of Warcraft player from South Park, hunched over his keyboard and mouse in a messy apartment full of discs and energy drink cans. People add top and bottom Impact text to make him the stand-in for internet trolls, comment-section arguers and anyone who's spent way too long online. It's been a reaction image since the early 2010s and is a stock template on Imgflip.

Origin

The character is from Make Love, Not Warcraft, the eighth episode of the show's 10th season, which aired on October 4, 2006. In the episode he's played World of Warcraft for so many hours that his character can kill other players at will, and the boys have to grind for weeks to beat him. Streamer Pirate Software has said his father, who worked at Blizzard back then, was the inspiration for the character.

Screenshots were floating around online by 2008, and the earliest surviving captioned version is from 2013. That same year a cosplay of the character by Jarod Nandin went viral on Reddit. The image spread wider around 2017 once Imgflip added it as a template, and in January 2021 a tweet announcing Nandin's death from COVID-19 complications got more than 46,000 likes.

Meaning

The Gamer Guy is the internet's go-to picture of a terminally online person: the troll who thinks he's clever, the stranger you're arguing with in the replies, the guy behind every bad take. Captions usually set him up as "the guy you're talking to" or have him narrate his own plans in a smug voice.

It's mostly used to mock other people, though gamers also post it about themselves, as a joke about how they look after a long session.
