About

“SpongeBob Thinking” is a reaction image of SpongeBob SquarePants squinting at a notepad, tongue sticking out, tapping his head with a pencil. It's also known by his line from the scene, "Come on, think!" In the usual version, a caption sits in a white bar above the still and describes someone straining to come up with an answer, a plan, or the right words. It shows up on Reddit, Tumblr, X and Instagram.

Origin

The still comes from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "SpongeGuard on Duty," which first aired on March 22, 2002. In the scene SpongeBob, working as a lifeguard, writes down that pretending to drown doesn't get any laughs. Screenshots of it were floating around LiveJournal as early as 2007, though not as a meme yet.

On September 3, 2014, the SpongeBob Tumblr page posted a GIF of the moment captioned "Trying to remember everything you learned in school last year," and it picked up over 2,000 notes. A 2017 Tumblr thread of SpongeBob reaction images helped spread the still version, and by 2018 captioned versions were common on Reddit's /r/BikiniBottomTwitter. In February 2025 Elon Musk and Donald Trump both posted a version that paired it with Patrick's To-Do List, mocking federal workers who were told to list what they'd done the week before.

Meaning

The meme is about thinking way too hard. The caption sets up a situation, and SpongeBob's strained face shows the effort going into it: replying to a one-word text, filling a contract with legalese, inventing a comeback years too late.

Most of the joke comes from the gap between how much effort goes in and how little the task deserves. People use it to make fun of themselves, but also to tease anyone who overcomplicates things on purpose.
