Stressed Mekhi Phifer Smoking

About
“Stressed Mekhi Phifer Smoking” is a one-panel reaction image of actor Mekhi Phifer sitting with his eyes shut and his head bowed, pressing the hand that holds a lit cigarette against his forehead while smoke curls up over his head. It's basically a facepalm with a cigarette in it. The image gets captioned with a short line of text above it and shows up on Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit and in group chats, sometimes under generic names like Stressed Man Smoking a Cigarette or Fed Up Mekhi Phifer.
Origin
The still comes from Paid in Full, a 2002 crime drama directed by Charles Stone III and loosely based on the lives of Harlem drug dealers Azie Faison, Rich Porter and Alpo Martinez. Phifer plays Mitch, the character based on Porter, and the busy striped sweater he wears in the shot fits the film's late-1980s Harlem setting.
Nobody seems to know who first turned the frame into a meme. It was already a familiar reaction pic by February 28, 2019, when director Matthew A. Cherry tweeted asking who had "the pic of Mekhi Phifer smoking a cigarette", and a "Mekhi Phifer" template went up on Imgflip around the same time. Some meme generators still label the man as Will Smith, and a few merch listings tag it as The Bobby Brown Story, but both are mix-ups.
Meaning
The image stands for tired, fed-up disbelief. People post it when news ruins their day, when a problem they saw coming happens anyway, or when they have to deal with the same mess for the hundredth time. The usual caption sets up the stressful situation ("When you fix one bug and three new ones show up") and lets Phifer's face do the rest.
It's less about panic than about quiet exhaustion. He isn't yelling or crying. He's just done, and that low-key "I can't with this" mood is why it works for everything from schoolwork and money trouble to family drama.
