About
“White Man In A Kimono” is a one-panel image macro built on a photo of a white man and an Asian woman posing at a Japanese shrine, both in traditional kimono. The man looks straight at the camera with a calm, slightly smug expression while the woman leans her head on his shoulder. A caption goes above the photo, usually something like "How I feel when I call X by its Japanese name." It's also known as WMAF In Kimonos and mostly circulates on X, Reddit and 4chan.
Origin
The photo first got attention on August 30, 2021, when an anonymous user posted it to 4chan's /r9k/ board and claimed the man was Ken-Sama, a fictional weeaboo from a 2009 /jp/ copypasta who had his own unrelated photo. The poster joked that Ken-Sama had slimmed down and found a Japanese girlfriend. The image moved to /fit/ a week later, and on September 7, 2021, X user @KasaiKaiser paired it with the original Ken-Sama post, picking up over 14,000 likes.
It turned into an actual meme format in 2024. On January 31 of that year, @Extralongdokkan posted the earliest known viral version on X, and a Reddit post on /r/PirateFolk the same day mocked One Piece fans who say "tenryuubito" instead of "celestial dragon." Through the rest of 2024 people kept captioning it with anime and game names, from "Kamehameha" instead of "Turtle Wave Beam" to calling Frieza "Freezer," and some of those posts passed 40,000 likes.
Meaning
The meme makes fun of Japanophiles who show off their knowledge of Japanese culture by using original Japanese names or terms where an English one exists. The man's self-satisfied pose stands in for how cultured that person thinks they look.
Most versions target fans who insist on "Gojira" or "Rockman," but the format travels beyond Japan. Spanish-speaking posters use it on people who call Bob Esponja by its original name, "SpongeBob," for the same smug payoff. Posters also use it on themselves, admitting they enjoy the feeling.
