About
“Wolf Wearing Sheep's Clothing” is an image macro built on a painting of a wolf holding a sheep's face up over its own, like a mask, while it peeks out from behind it with a toothy grin. The usual caption sits at the bottom and names a group of people, often in the form "Men who..." or "Girls who...", implying they're hiding something under a harmless surface. It's also known as Wolf in Disguise and gets passed around on Instagram, TikTok, X and Reddit.
Origin
Nobody knows who painted it. One of the earliest known posts of the image online was on the blog The Daily (Maybe) on October 14, 2009, where it ran next to the Bible verse Matthew 18:12 about the one lost sheep. The idea itself is much older, going back to the fable of the wolf that wears a sheepskin to get close to the flock, and to the warning about false prophets in Matthew 7:15.
The first known meme version showed up on Imgflip on November 30, 2016, when user ErrantBelle captioned it "Always be on guard, your kindness and compassion will be weaponized by those who possess neither." The ironic version took off much later. On January 7, 2025, Instagram user @the.soundgeist posted it with the caption "Men who listen to Taylor Swift", and the post pulled in over 77,000 comments within three months. Brazilian TikTok picked it up around the same time.
Meaning
The joke is that someone looks soft and safe but is actually up to something. The caption names a type of person, and the image says they're a predator in disguise: the guy who listens to Taylor Swift, the girl into Death Grips, the man who carries a water bottle everywhere. Usually the "disguise" is some innocent habit or taste, which is what makes it funny.
It started out as a sincere warning, mostly in religious posts about trusting the wrong people. These days it's almost always ironic, and a lot of the time it's teasing people for being cooler, scarier or more interesting than they let on.
