“Anne Hathaway HR” is a one-panel reaction image of actress Anne Hathaway smiling straight into the camera during a video call, with a caption written above it that casts her as a human resources manager. The captions usually start with "POV:" and set up something bad that HR is about to do to you, like firing you, ghosting you or binning your resume. Origin
The still comes from a 2021 episode of RuPaul's Drag Race, where Hathaway surprised the contestants over Zoom ahead of the Rusical challenge. The clip went up on the show's YouTube channel on February 19th, 2021. People covered the moment the same day, and the frame used in the memes comes from that article.
The earliest known meme appeared the next day, February 20th, 2021, when X user @TheMattChuChu posted it with the caption "POV: Your company's HR director is about to fire you on a Zoom call." That tweet got over 172,000 likes. The format kept coming back after that, including a December 2023 post on /r/meirl with over 48,000 upvotes. In early 2025 a Soyjak-style drawing traced from the same frame, known as HRjak, went viral and brought a lot more attention to the original photo.
In August 2026, Hathaway talked about the meme in an Esquire video with Ewan McGregor. She said she'd been having a panic attack during that Zoom call, and that the smile "goes nowhere near my eyes," which is why it works so well as the face of HR.
Meaning
The joke is the gap between the warm, polished smile and what's actually coming. She looks friendly and supportive, but you get the sense she's about to say something awful in the nicest possible voice. The caption spells out what that is, whether it's a layoff, a rejection email or a vague answer about salary.
People mostly use it to poke fun at HR clichés: the fake friendliness, the corporate phrases, candidates getting ghosted, and the idea that HR works for the company, not for you. It's aimed as much at the job market as at any one HR person.
