Chinese Paratrooper Crying

About
“Chinese Paratrooper Crying” is a one-panel caption meme built on a close-up photo of a young Chinese paramilitary recruit in a camouflage cap, eyes wide and tears running down his cheeks. The caption sits in a white bar above the photo and usually starts with "When a Chinese paratrooper finds out..." or "PLA troops when...", followed by the place or situation that broke him. It's also known as When a Chinese Paratrooper Finds Out or Chinese Soldier Crying, and it mostly lives on X and Reddit.
Origin
The photo goes back to 2010. Its earliest known appearance is a Rediff photo listicle from December 15, 2010, where the caption explains that the recruit was crying at a railway station in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, before leaving to start his service in Xinjiang.
The meme version showed up on March 17, 2024, when X user @Rothmus put a banner over the photo reading "When a Chinese paratrooper finds out they're being dropped into Appalachia and not New England." It came back in a much bigger way in October 2024, when a WW3 invasion map went around and people started swapping Appalachia for other places. An Atlanta version from @iBMM335 passed 53,000 likes in a week, and Winnipeg, Minnesota and California variants followed.
Meaning
The joke is an imagined invasion of America, where the invader is the one who should be scared. The caption names a region, city or culture the poster thinks is too rough, too weird or too depressing to survive, and the crying soldier is the punchline. Appalachian hillbillies, Atlanta, Winnipeg and Minnesota folk punk have all gotten the treatment.
Most versions are half brag and half self-roast. People are teasing their own hometowns as much as they're boasting about them, and the original Appalachia post drew some pushback from people who pointed out how poor and sick that region actually is.
