Disgusted Barbie

About
“Disgusted Barbie” (also called Shocked Barbie) is a reaction image of a blonde Barbie doll staring at the camera with wide, slightly crossed eyes and pursed lips, as if she just heard something awful. People post it on its own as a reply or use it as an image macro, with a line of text above the photo describing whatever the doll is reacting to. It shows up mostly on X, Reddit, Threads, Instagram and Imgur.
Origin
The doll is a 1993 "Mermaid Skipper and the Sea Twins" Barbie. Nobody knows exactly where the photo was first taken, but it may come from a TikTok video posted by @barbie_shining_pink on June 27th, 2023.
The image took off on July 16th, 2023, when X user @PickleMamaa quote-posted a Sky News headline about Hong Kongers being urged to stare at smokers disapprovingly, using the doll to show what that stare would look like. The post got over 29,000 likes. A week later, on July 23rd, @KaylarWill used it to answer a tweet that read "sorry, but I'm wearing black to see Barbie," right in the middle of the Barbie movie hype, and that reply got over 30,000 likes. BuzzFeed's Threads account and the /r/meirl subreddit picked it up later that summer.
Meaning
The doll stands in for the poster's own face at the moment they hear something shocking, gross or ridiculous. Most captions follow the "my face when" setup: someone says their boyfriend won't let them do something, summer is almost over, or aliens show up during a recession. The doll doesn't say anything, so the joke is all in that frozen, judgmental stare.
The tone is usually playful judgment rather than real anger. It works for mild disgust, disbelief and secondhand embarrassment, and the plastic, slightly uncanny look of the doll makes the reaction feel even more over the top.
