About

“Doakes Looking at Guerrero” is a one-panel reaction image from the TV series Dexter, showing Sergeant James Doakes cutting his eyes sideways at mobster Carlos Guerrero while Guerrero leans in close to say something. The caption normally sits on a white bar above the picture, in the format of a tweet screenshot, and sets up whatever the poster finds deeply suspicious. It spread on X and Reddit through mid-2025.

Origin

The shot comes from season 1, episode 3 of Dexter, titled Popping Cherry, which aired on October 15th, 2006. Doakes, played by Erik King, stands beside Carlos Guerrero, played by Rudolf Martin, at Guerrero's daughter's confirmation and gives him a long, flat side-eye.

It became a meme on July 8th, 2025, when X user @ExtremeBlitz__ posted a square crop of the screencap captioned "When I like bro's comment on a random post so he knows I'm always watching," which picked up over 134,000 likes in three weeks. The image turned up on the /r/Kagurabachi subreddit the next day, and by late July accounts like @NikTekOfficial and @oocdexter were posting it regularly. It belongs to the wider run of James Doakes Reaction Images that also produced the But you can't prove it catchphrase.

Meaning

The image stands for suspicion you can't act on. Somebody is lying, dodging, or behaving strangely, you are sure of it, and all you can do is stare. Captions often end with some version of "but I can't prove it," which is where the catchphrase comes from.

The tone is comic rather than angry. Most posts use it for small stuff: a friend hiding on Discord, a thin excuse, an opinion nobody actually believes. The face carries the joke, so the caption can stay flat and deadpan.
