“I Know What Kind of Man You Are” is a reaction image macro built from a subtitled still of The Walking Dead. Dale Horvath (Jeffrey DeMunn) stares down Shane Walsh (Jon Bernthal) at close range, and the yellow subtitle reads "I know what kind of man you are." Origin
The line comes from The Walking Dead season 2, episode 6, "Secrets," which aired on November 20th, 2011. Dale confronts Shane and accuses him of being capable of hurting Rick Grimes, his old police partner and best friend. Shane fires back by warning Dale to think about what a man like that might do to him. On May 30th, 2021, the YouTube channel MultiFandom Scene Studios uploaded the clip, and it passed 287,000 views.
The earliest known meme use is a TikTok from @clashedpr posted on February 20th, 2023, where Shane's face is warped into a horse's as Dale says the line. After that it turned into a caption format. Instagram user @imbasedman posted a version in October 2023 about someone who picks time freezing, mind control and invisibility as their superpowers. In 2024, /r/memes picked it up with posts about people who skip washing their hands and a coworker who takes long bathroom breaks with headphones on.
Meaning
The meme is a way of saying "I see right through you." The caption lays out something minor, like a suspicious answer to a hypothetical, a gap between the toilet flush and the door opening, or a particular game or music choice, and Dale's stare implies that one detail reveals someone's whole character.
Most of the time it's playful. The "crime" is usually petty or oddly specific, and the joke is in treating it like proof of something much darker, the way Dale treats Shane in the show.
