“Leonardo DiCaprio Oscars Shrug” is a reaction image of Leonardo DiCaprio sitting in the audience at the 2026 Academy Awards in a tuxedo and a fresh moustache, smirking and holding his hands out in a shrug. It started life as a joke caption, TFW you didn't agree to this, and is also known as the New Leo Meme. People now post it under their own captions about awkward, helpless moments, mostly on X, Reddit and Instagram.
Origin
The moment came from the 98th Academy Awards on March 15th, 2026, hosted by Conan O'Brien. During the monologue, Conan called DiCaprio the king of memes and put a few of his classics on screen, including Leonardo DiCaprio Laughing and the Great Gatsby toast. Then he said he'd make a brand new Leo meme on the spot. The camera cut to DiCaprio with TFW you didn't agree to this laid over the shot, and Leo, realizing he was on screen, just shrugged and smirked.
The clip went viral that night. A repost by X user @MarioNawfal saying Conan had made a new Leo meme in real time passed 2.2 million views within three days. By the next day brands were joining in. The official World of Warcraft account posted a version about Shadow Priests being asked to heal, and captioned edits on /r/memes pulled in tens of thousands of upvotes.
Meaning
The shrug reads as well, what can you do. It fits any situation where you're stuck with something you had no say in, or where you messed up and can only grin about it: a train skipping your stop, dropping an easy catch in front of your team, admitting you forgot your skates after an hour in the car.
It's a little unusual in that it was a meme on purpose. Conan announced it live, so some people wrote it off as forced or cringe. That didn't stop it from spreading, and the joke about Leo being a walking meme factory is baked into why it caught on.
