About
“Man Reading the Bible and Smoking a Blunt” is a reaction image of a shirtless man in a grainy black-and-white photo, staring down at an open Bible with a lit blunt in his other hand. A caption goes above the picture, usually describing something the poster is reading or watching with way too much focus. It's been around since 2016 and picked up a second wind on X, Reddit and iFunny in 2023 and 2024.
Origin
The earliest known meme with the photo was posted to /r/BlackPeopleTwitter on January 31st, 2016, by Redditor u/imjayybro. Its caption was "sometimes you have to be high to understand the most-high", a pun on getting high and God as the Most High. The image may have come from an older tweet that has since been deleted.
The format came back in late 2023. A screenshot of a tweet captioned "Reading the groupchat after I take a nap" was shared on /r/196 in November 2023, and versions on X kept getting bigger through 2024. A May 2024 post by @bendergirlfrend about watching the American Dad intro to see Roger's outfit passed 33,000 likes in two weeks, and a June 2024 quote-post by @yunusincognito pulled in more than 87,000 likes in a day.
Meaning
The picture stands for intense, almost spiritual concentration. The man looks like he's studying scripture for hidden truths, so captions put him in front of something trivial: a group chat that blew up during a nap, a cartoon's opening credits, or a document nobody normally reads. The joke is the gap between how seriously he's reading and how little the thing deserves it.
The blunt adds to it. It suggests a state where everything feels deep, which is why the original "most-high" caption still fits most of the newer ones.
