About
“SpongeBob Wanted Maniac” is a one-panel image macro and reaction image showing SpongeBob in his hall monitor hat, squinting suspiciously and holding a remote, while a poster behind him with his own face reads "Wanted Maniac." A caption above the image names someone hunting for the cause of a problem when they're the cause themselves. It shows up on Reddit, X / Twitter and Tumblr.
Origin
The frame comes from "Hall Monitor," a first-season episode of SpongeBob SquarePants that aired on August 28th, 1999. Mrs. Puff makes SpongeBob hall monitor at her boating school, and he takes the job out into Bikini Bottom and wrecks the town. When the news warns about a maniac on the loose, he sets off to catch the culprit, standing right next to a wanted poster of himself.
One of the earliest known posts using the image is an April 11th, 2018 Tumblr post by spongebobssquarepants, which passed 60,000 notes. On February 5th, 2019, Redditor /u/ChrisTweten posted "YouTube trying to figure out whose been killing their platform," which got over 20,000 upvotes, and Lil Nas X shared the meme on Twitter on August 5th, 2021 to more than 85,000 likes.
Meaning
The meme makes fun of people who complain about a problem without noticing they caused it. Captions usually follow a "X looking for whoever did Y" setup, and the poster behind SpongeBob delivers the punchline. Common targets include celebrities, companies blamed for running their own platforms into the ground, and gaming teammates.
The tone is teasing, and it works just as well as self-deprecation, like when someone's hunting for whoever keeps leaving dishes in the sink. Literary versions work too: Oedipus searching for King Laius's killer is basically the same joke, a couple thousand years early.
