About
“The Work Is Mysterious and Important” is a one-panel reaction image taken from the Apple TV+ series Severance. It shows Adam Scott as Mark Scout, finger raised, with the subtitle "The work is mysterious and important." burned in along the bottom of the frame. People put a caption in a white bar above the screenshot describing some habit or job they can't really explain, and it gets shared on X, Threads, Reddit and Instagram.
Origin
The line comes from season one, episode four of Severance, "The You You Are," which aired on March 4th, 2022. New hire Helly calls the job at Lumen "bullshit" because nobody can tell her what it's for, and Mark answers her with the line. On March 7th, X user @gretaprofessor posted a screenshot of Mark from the scene, the earliest known share of the image. On March 21st, Reddit user u/dem3000 posted the first known meme to /r/SeveranceAppleTVPlus, using a shot of Helly surrounded by kneading cats and asking to make the line "a new fad in memes."
It took off in early 2025, around the season two premiere, and by then the shot of Mark with his finger up had become the standard version. On January 21st, 2025, X user @megannn_lynne captioned it "Putting a bay leaf in a recipe even though idk what the fuck it does" and got more than 244,000 likes in two weeks. A week later, the Beyond Meat account on Threads posted its own version about spending all day on Threads.
Meaning
The meme is for defending something you do without knowing why you do it. Common targets are skincare routines, cooking rituals, niche hobbies, and jobs that are hard to explain at parties, like software development or actuarial work.
The joke works because Mark has no idea what his work actually does, and he defends it anyway. Using the image means admitting your own routine might be just as hollow while still standing by it with a straight face.
