Jimmy Butler Reading

About
“Jimmy Butler Reading” (also called Jimmy Butler Looking at Paper or the Guy Looking at Paper meme) is a reaction image of NBA player Jimmy Butler squinting at a stat sheet from the sidelines, holding it out at arm's length like he can't quite believe what's printed on it. It's posted as a reply to confusing or badly written text, and it also works as an image macro with a caption naming whatever he's supposed to be reading. Most of it lives on Twitter / X, with plenty of copies on Instagram and Reddit.
Origin
Nobody knows who took the photo. Its earliest known use online is from April 10th, 2018, when a Twitter user posted it in reply to a tweet laying out the NBA's Western Conference playoff scenarios. That reply got only around 40 likes.
It picked up quickly after that. On May 1st, 2018, another user posted it as a reaction to Kanye West's "slavery was a choice" comments, and that tweet passed 10,000 likes. The image came back in February 2025, when Butler's trade out of Miami had people posting it about trying to make sense of all the moving parts of the deal. Edited versions turned up along the way too, many of them making the paper give off a huge glow of light.
Meaning
The meme says "I'm reading this and it makes no sense." People reply with it to word salad, broken grammar, wild takes, and fine print, and use it as a caption for anything that's hard to decode, like a bank statement, a doctor's handwriting, or a pile of vague instructions.
Butler's face carries most of it. He doesn't look angry, just suspicious and a bit lost, as if he's reading the same line for the third time. That's why it fits mild confusion so well, and why it's mostly used to poke fun rather than start a fight.
