Noooo, Put Me Back
Contents
About
“Noooo, Put Me Back” is a one-panel image macro based on a still from The Matrix of Neo (Keanu Reeves) bursting out of his slime-filled pod, gasping, with tubes hanging off him. The top text is always some version of "NOOOO PUT ME BACK," and the bottom text explains what he was in the middle of when he got unplugged. It's been shared on Instagram, Facebook, iFunny and X/Twitter since 2021.
Origin
The image comes from the 1999 film The Matrix. After taking the red pill, Neo wakes up in the real world inside a pod of pink fluid, wired into the machines that had been feeding him the simulation, and rips himself free. A promo still of that moment, with his hands raised as he breaks the surface, became the template.
The earliest known version was posted on March 22, 2021, by the Instagram meme page on_a_downward_spiral, with the caption "Noooo, put me back, I was a niche internet micro celebrity." That post has since been deleted. Other versions followed through 2021, including a popular "I was forklift certified" edit, and the format kept turning up on Facebook and X in 2022 and 2023.
Meaning
The meme flips the point of The Matrix. Instead of being grateful to wake up, Neo wants to go back to the fake world, because he had something good going in there. The bottom caption names the thing he lost: a dream, a small achievement, a moment of almost understanding something hard.
It works for any comfortable illusion you'd rather keep, and the joke lands best when the lost thing is small or a little pathetic. Philosophy and self-deprecating meme pages like it for exactly that reason.
