Why Would I Deceive You

About
“Why Would I Deceive You” is a reaction image of Elizabeth Holmes staring wide-eyed and half-smiling, taken from the teaser for Nathan Fielder's documentary You Can See Everything. The caption sits on a white bar above the picture and is written as something Holmes is saying, usually a claim nobody would actually believe. It spread on X / Twitter and Instagram in September 2026, sometimes paired with a matching still of Fielder looking unconvinced.
Origin
On September 6th, 2026, A24 released a teaser for You Can See Everything, a documentary produced by Nathan Fielder about Elizabeth Holmes in the period before her arrest for wire fraud. In one scene Fielder asks whether she is deceiving him and Holmes answers, without blinking, "Why would I deceive you?" The clip was reposted on X by @yashar and picked up more than 32 million views in three days.
The memes started the same day. X user @flapprdotnet paired stills of Holmes and Fielder under the caption "I bought us tickets to the pumpkin patch that's an hour away on Labor Day," which drew over 22,000 likes. Versions from @jarvis_best, @TSDmemes and @TonyMichaelX followed over the next two days, and the Instagram account @overheard pushed it past 180,000 views with a post about tricking a dog into swallowing a pill.
Meaning
The Holmes still stands in for anyone telling an obvious lie with total confidence. Most captions are domestic: the partner who insists they are not mad, the friend who swears the group plan will be fun, the person promising they only need five more minutes. The joke is the gap between how sincere the face looks and how plainly false the line is.
Used on its own, the single panel does both halves of the work, since her actual fraud case is the punchline sitting behind whatever the caption says. Paired with Fielder, his expression takes over the second half as the listener who knows better and says nothing.
