Shaq Timeout

About
“Shaq Timeout”, also written Shaq Time Out, is a reaction image of former NBA player Shaquille O'Neal staring seriously into the camera while making the "time out" sign with his hands. People post it with a short caption on top describing a moment that made them want to stop everything. It took off on Twitter / X in October 2024 and later showed up on Reddit too.
Origin
The photo was shot for Timeout Against Hate, a campaign against hate launched by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft together with commissioners of the major American sports leagues. On October 10th, 2024, ESPN reporter Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) shared the campaign's promo images on X, Shaq's among them. The post passed 11 million views within a few days.
The same day, X user @DaveMcNamee3000 posted the first known meme with it: "When I'm at the feminist bookstore and I hear someone say something with classist undertones." A near-identical version about hearing a microaggression in a feminist bookstore, posted hours later by @brodieonthecorn, got over 237,000 likes. Over the next few days the picture was everywhere, with jokes about sports stats, Pushin' P, Eminem lyrics and TV shows like Supernatural.
Meaning
Shaq's T sign stands for "hold on, stop right there." The caption sets up a situation, usually something slightly off, problematic or annoying, and the photo is the reaction to it.
Much of its popularity came from fandoms. Fans used it to call out the awkward parts of things they love, like a racist caricature in an old comic, a misogynistic lyric from an old band, or a teammate's bad pick in a video game. The joke is usually aimed at the speaker as much as at the thing they're stopping.
